TSA hits record-breaking screening numbers, marks end of Summer Period

Last week, The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), officially closed out the summer travel season. The summer travel period is the Wednesday before Memorial Day until the Tuesday after Labor Day. During this time, the TSA screened 262 million passengers as well as crew members which is approximately 3.4% more than last year during this same time. There were also nearly 164 million items of luggage checked. With the busiest summer days, the TSA worked with airline partners to meet the demand increasing staff by nearly 2,000 officers. In addition to the busy summer, the TSA remembers 9/11 as the TSA Acting Deputy Administrator, Patricia Cogswell said, “the anniversary of the September 11 attacks is a regular reminder of the importance of TSA’s mission to protect the traveling public … despite the requirements of screening these record numbers of travelers and their belongings, our people remain dedicated to safety and security above all else.”
