REAL ID Requirements by 2020

The REAL ID act is only one year away, are you compliant? Beginning October 1, 2020, all U.S. residents will need to have a star on their driver’s license. This indicates that it is a REAL ID and compliant to fly, otherwise, passengers will need another form of communication. The star on the upper right-hand corner indicates that this meets the new federal standard. Travelers should note there is a one-time $10 REAL ID surcharge in addition to the regular license fee. To obtain a REAL ID-compliant license you need to bring the following to the DMV office – one proof of identity, one proof of legal presence, two proofs of Virginia residency, one proof of your social security number (if you’ve been issued one) and a current driver’s license if you are applying to exchange one issued by another U.S. state. If travelers do not have a REAL ID after Oct 1, the Transportation Security Administration will not allow travelers to go through security at airports nationwide. TSA has started to post signs at various airports throughout the country.
