Amtrak Will Upgrade New York Penn Station

New York’s Penn Station is undergoing renovations at Moynihan Train Hall. These updates are scheduled to be finished by summer 2020. These upgrades are going to include a new Moynihan Train Hall which will open in December. There is now a temporary waiting area between tracks 9/10 and 13/14 at Penn Station. The new hall will have an updating ticket and passenger waiting area. It is being built next to the original Penn Station, in the old Post Office building across 8th Ave. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), will move base operations to Moynihan from Penn after it opens. Governor Andrew Cuomo has extensive plans for Penn Station in general, besides just the new hall. Penn Station will expand increasing capacity by 40%. The state will buy the block between 7th and 8th avenues to construct 8 new platforms and tracks. The upgrade will make the commute nicer for 200 million people that go through Penn Station annually. Cuomo says, “Penn Station has more people go through it than LaGuardia, JFK and Newark’s airports combined… just imagine how many people are coming through Penn and that’s their first impression of New York?”
